Sam Hoenig

Sam is a native New Englander who attended Colby College for his undergraduate studies, where he was a member of the varsity tennis team and majored in biochemistry. He is currently a 4th-year medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and is passionate about a career in cardiac surgery. In medical school, he was president of the American College of Surgeons-affiliated Holden Surgical Society, where, among other responsibilities, worked to curate a preclinical cardiac surgery elective curriculum for his home institution. In medical school, Sam’s primary research interests have been in the evolution of clinical care paradigms and new techniques for congenital heart disease. Clinically, he is passionate about all aspects of cardiac surgery; most importantly, the care provided for these complex patients. Sam loves networking and hopes to connect students to future mentors and colleagues. He is thrilled to work alongside his co-chair, Kevin, this year on the Networking and Outreach Committee.

Audrey Schreiner

Audrey was raised in Vail, AZ and moved to New Orleans for undergrad. She started at Loyola University New Orleans and transferred to Tulane University to complete her degree in biomedical engineering. She then attended Carnegie Mellon University to complete a Masters in biomedical engineering. She is currently a fourth year medical student at Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine. During her medical education, she founded the school’s chapter of American College of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine (ACOEP), the student teaching program for ACLS/BLS, and a volunteer leadership team with the Sedgwick County Medical Reserve Corps. She was also a volunteer EMT during her first 2.5 years of medical school. Outside of school, she loves being indoor bouldering, running, and paddleboarding. She has always had a passion for cardiothoracic surgery, pursuing research in cardiac biosensors, thromboelastometry, and founding the CMU chapter of Student Organ Donation Advocates. She is excited to be a part of growing the network reached with TSMA and helping others get into the field.

Deeya Sharma

Deeya Sharma is a medical student at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine with a B.A. in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies. She is the Co-Founder of ReviveHer, a company developing breast attachments for CPR manikins to address gender disparities in cardiac arrest response and training. She is also the Founder and President of WE CARE, a nonprofit supporting women’s health, education, and physician-hood in India, Ghana, and Italy. At her medical school, Deeya serves as the founder and co-lead for American Medical Women’s Association UW chapter and as the co-lead for the Research Interest Group.

Deeya has a strong interest in transplant disparities research and inclusive, gender-aware simulation-based education. Her long-term goal is to improve women’s health outcomes in cardiac health and cardiac surgery by addressing gaps in diagnosis, treatment, and clinical training that disproportionately affect female patients. As a TSMA Networking & Outreach Committee member, she is excited to foster mentorship, connection, and a more inclusive pipeline into cardiothoracic surgery. Outside of medicine, she enjoys hot yoga and visiting art galleries.

Anish Katta

Anish is a third-year medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University, where he developed his early interest in cardiovascular surgery. His research has focused on congenital cardiac and valvular surgery, with interests in decision analysis, long-term outcomes, and disparities in care. At Case Western, Anish served as president of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Interest Group and was part of the Human Rights Initiative Leadership Team, helping provide medical evaluations for asylum seekers. He is also a member of the World Medicine Pathway, where he is exploring his passion for global health and learning about approaches to expand access to cardiac surgery worldwide. Long-term, he aspires to become a cardiac surgeon with a career that integrates clinical innovation, mentorship, and global health. Outside of medicine, he enjoys swimming and discovering local restaurants and coffee shops. He is excited to serve on the TSMA Networking and Outreach Committee and looks forward to helping connect students and expand opportunities for those interested in cardiothoracic surgery.

Shwetabh Tarun

Shubham Gulati is currently a third-year medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Shubham grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated with a bachelor's and master's degree in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University in 2022. Since starting medical school, he has found an interest in general thoracic surgery and continues to explore this specialty through research, clinical experiences, and conferences. At Mount Sinai, Shubham works closely with Dr. Raja Flores and the rest of thoracic surgery department on a variety of research and translational projects.

Kevin Xiao

Kevin is from Dayton, Ohio, and attended Emory University where he majored in biology and chemistry. Currently, he is a third-year medical student at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. During medical school, he conducts clinical outcome research as well as translational research under the mentorship of Dr. Bryan Whitson, the chief of Division of Cardiac Surgery at The OSU Wexner Medical Center. Driven by a deep passion for cardiac surgery, he aims to innovate new treatments for advanced heart failure and transplant patients. His inspiration stems from his own transplant research discoveries as well as hands-on experiences gained through the OSU Wexner Cardiothoracic Scholar Program. In his free time, he enjoys staying active through workouts, running, and engaging in motorsports. As a co-chair of the Networking Committee, he is privileged to work alongside motivated peers and is eager to contribute to TSMA's mission of attracting and supporting the growing cohort of students interested in cardiothoracic surgery.
