Mentorship Committee

Amartya Dave

Amartya is originally from Aurora, IL, and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he earned his degree in bioengineering. Currently, Amartya is a third-year student at the UCSF School of Medicine and is an aspiring cardiac surgeon. Amartya was a 2023 AATS Summer Intern Scholar and conducts aortic research with Dr. Elaine Tseng. Guided by his engineering experience, Amartya is also a part of UCSF Surgical Innovations through which he aims to support the development and adoption of new technologies at his institution. Outside of school, you can find Amartya playing volleyball, trying new food, sight-reading music on his viola, and trying to learn the guitar. He is very excited to be working with a group of talented peers to support TSMA’s mission to encourage and guide students toward rewarding careers in cardiothoracic surgery.

Pedro Colon

Pedro is originally from Puerto Rico and attended MIT where he majored in Chemistry and Biology. He is currently a third year student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine pursuing an MBA at Stern School of Business. He has a great interest for cardiovascular health and modifiable risk factors of disease.

During his time at NYU he has worked on research related to transplants and the endocrine effects of early time restricted eating, has co-founded the high value care club, and has served as his class’s representative in the school’s larger student council. He is interested in helping other students find their own path within medicine and is excited to be working as a mentorship committee member to support students who are interested in cardiothoracic surgery.

Kwadwo Amoako-Boadu

Kwadwo Amoako-Boadu is a second-year medical student at Weill Cornell Medicine

with a strong commitment to mentorship, diversity, and health equity. He earned his

Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Psychology from the City College of New

York, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, was a member of the Honors College,

and received the 2021 Ernesto Malave Merit Award. At Weill Cornell, Kwadwo serves as the Mentorship Director for CODE BLOOM, a program that connects Hunter College pre-medical students with medical student and faculty mentors, and as the Diversity Chair of the Medical School Executive Council (MSEC), where he advocates for student needs and supports inclusive programming. Most recently, Kwadwo was selected as a Mentorship Committee Member for the Thoracic Surgery Medical Student Association (TSMA), where he contributes to national initiatives that expand access, foster meaningful mentor-mentee connections, and support aspiring cardiothoracic surgeons from diverse backgrounds. His leadership spans academic medicine, community engagement, and pipeline development—making him deeply invested in fosteringaccess and representation in surgical fields.

Josette Vidal Medicielo

Josette grew up in both California and Nevada, and was the first in her family to attend college. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno, and has worked across diverse fields from infectious diseases to teaching in rural South Korea. At the Medical College of Wisconsin, Josette serves as the cardiothoracic surgery chair for the Student Surgical Society, as well as president of the Philippine Center Free Medical Clinic. She is also a recipient of the 2025 AATS Summer Intern Scholarship, through which she further explored her interests in thoracic oncology and health disparities at Stanford under the mentorship of Dr. Leah Backhus.

Josette is an aspiring academic surgeon whose path has been shaped by critical mentorship. Coming from a first-generation, low-income background with no roadmap to medicine, she found her way by seeking mentors who saw her potential and opened doors that otherwise would have remained closed. Now, she is committed to doing the same for others. As a member of TSMA’s mentorship committee, she is excited to expand access for those who are searching for a starting point.

In her free time, Josette enjoys strength training, cooking, food-inspired travel, and learning new languages.

Shubham Gulati

Shubham Gulati is currently a fourth-year medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. He will be applying to general surgery residency programs this cycle. Shubham grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University in 2022. Since starting medical school, Shubham has been deeply interested in the field of general thoracic surgery: conducting research projects, presenting at conferences, and publishing in leading journals. At Mount Sinai, Shubham works closely with Dr. Raja Flores, Dr. Andrea Wolf, and the rest of thoracic surgery department on a variety of research and translational projects. He also spent the summer following his first year of medical school researching at Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston under the mentorship of Dr. Hassan Khalil and Dr. M. Blair Marshall. These inspirational mentors have reinforced and shaped Shubham’s desire to pursue thoracic surgery.

Shubham previously served as a member on the TSMA Networking Committee and is excited to serve as Co-Chair for the Mentorship Committee this year. Outside of medicine, Shubham is hoping to improve his pickleball skills and take more wheel throwing classes as he explores the world of ceramics!
