Kaustav was born in Kolkata, India, but moved to Los Angeles, CA when he was a year old, and has grown up there for the majority of his life. He attended UC Berkeley where he majored in Molecular and Cell Biology, with a concentration in Neurobiology. During his time at Cal, Kaustav was involved in many extracurricular projects. The one that he is the most proud of is Project SCIFI, a nonprofit organization that provides STEM equipment and resources to underserved and under resourced middle and high schools throughout the country. Through his time at Project SCIFI, Kaustav learned the importance of networking and strict upkeep of finances, helping him succeed at his role as co-founder and Chief Networking Officer. Kaustav is an aspiring cardiac surgeon and his main interests lie within the realm of global cardiac surgery. In terms of potential avenues of interests, Kaustav is fascinated by valve replacements and repairs and heart transplants, but is also interested in congenital cardiac repairs. Outside of medicine and surgery, Kaustav enjoys reading, working out, spending time with his girlfriend and friends. As someone who is just starting at TSMA, he is hoping to make a palpable and significant contribution to the work that has already been done and will be done. He is honored to work with such bright and hard-working individuals in TSMA in an effort to grow TSMA’s reach to recruit, support, and help cultivate the budding interest in cardiac surgery for generations to come.
